Walchensee September 2007

Team: Manu, Peter, Tibor, Robin, Roland

Friday / Arrival

Before the winter break we wanted to dive once more at the gallery. Despite the short term planning we found quarters and were looking forward to the weekend. Because of several traffic jams the arrival was delayed into the night, the common nightcap had to be cancelled and we arranged to meet at the gallery the next morning.

Saturday / Walchensee - Gallery

When everyone met at about ½ 10, we were the only ones in the parking lot, so we were able to secure the best parking spots. Since the morning had started out gray and with clouds, we took it slow and used the time to chat. And that should be worthwhile! Because after some time the sun came out. So we got ready, brought the stages into the water and after a thorough briefing we could start. We had formed 2 teams: Tibor, Manu and Peter planned for 60m bottom depth, while Roland and Robin aimed for the triple-digit range. Until the Ford both teams dived together. On the way down we met 2 divers who must have thought we were aliens with all the stages, rebreathers and lightsabers. It is a great impression when 5 lightsabers conjure up an atmosphere like on the moon in good visibility! Arrived at the Ford we parted ways as agreed: Tibor, Manu and Peter followed the wall to the left, and we could watch Roland and Robin for quite a while as they sank further into the depth.

Despite the fact that we had never been in the water with Tibor before, the dive went calmly and as planned until the 6m deco stop. This is a huge advantage of the DIR system. Besides the identical equipment, also procedures (gas change, communication) and planning basics (gases, deco stops) are identical, so that you can dive with a still unknown DIR diver at any time without experiencing any bad surprises.

At the 6m stop, Tibor was met by a huge gush of bubbles as he switched to the oxygen stage: The first stage had come loose. After Tibor had screwed it back on, the second stage blew off diligently. Therefore he screwed the bottom stage regulator on the 6m tank and we could start to run down the time for the stop.

After the dive we relaxed on the water for a few minutes, talked about the TG and parked our stages. Once we arrived at the cars, we helped ourselves out of the equipment and knew we had about 50 minutes until Roland and Robin showed up. So we got out our folding chairs and had a coffee before we started to clear the entrance of our stages for the second team. Then, as we watched Roland and Robin climb the last few meters, we went down to help them with their gear: We had prepared rope loops into which they could hang their stages. So we could take the stages from the shore and help them out of the water.

In the afternoon we went to a tour shed (Panoramablick or something) at the lake, but we left it again towards Grauer Bär in Kochel. In the evening we enjoyed an isotonic cold drink in the cellar bar.

Sunday / Lake Starnberg

The next morning we met at 10 at the Wasserwacht at the Starnberger See and could just get the last parking spaces. Then we got livened up and let Roland show us the steep face with rowing boat. During the otherwise uneventful deco, I had a sanitary emergency and cursed my laziness for not putting on the man-machine adapter. When we came out of the water we met Albert and chatted for half an hour before heading home.
